Generally tuna is one of the largest fish stocks in our oceans. The family consists of officially 14 species and another close relation called SKIPJACK.

A preference for warm water
The ability and need to swim long and fast because when they stop they suffer insufficient oxygenation of the blood.
They often cover long distances in search for food which makes them the highest migratory fish family.
They start off their diet with plankton, quickly escalating to larvae followed by small fish, squid, molluscs and crustaceans.
They are positioned at the top of the oceanic food chain.

In 2018 the total catch of tuna species – which is of commercial interest – was 5,4 million tons, while the capture of other tuna species add up to 1,9 million tons. In total this amounts to a staggering 7,3 million tons. This is double the total catch of 1987!
